The characters play the role of those for whom the novel's events occur as they go through the battle. The experiences of the main characters might be internal or external. For instance, Internal: The character overcoming grief; External: Characters in conflict with another or a character surviving a natural disaster. Character development determines what information readers may learn about a character in a work of literature. How complicated a character is depicted and how much the author is ready to reveal to us is known as character development. This frequently relies on how closely a character is tied to the major plot points of the novel; if a character is not heavily involved in the plot, readers may not know a great deal about them. This article is devoted to character analysis, in which it studies the characters of Ermon Buva and Habiba Buva, the heroes of O‘tkir Hoshimov’s collection of stories “Dunyoning ishlari”.
This article discusses the novel “Dunyoning ishlari” written by uzbek writer O‘tkir Hoshimov. We can surely say that this work is about mothers, because in all the described stories in the center of the events there is the image of a mother. While reading the book, readers feels as if the events are related to their past and make them think about their own mistakes. In the preface of the book the author says “I want mothers all over the world to read this book” [1, p. 336]. This sentence clearly shows that the work is about the mothers of the whole world. As the author himself has mentioned that the story of “Ermon buvaning tilagi” (“The wish of Ermon buva”) illustrates the dreams of the father (Ermon buva) who wished the return of his son from the war. All of the children of Ermon buva and Habiba buvi died in infant age, the only survived child was Olmishvoy, who was born when Ermon buva was at his sixties. Unfortunately, he was taken to the World War II and never returned to the village.
In the short story “Erman buvaning tilagi”, the author begins describing the characteristics of Ermon buva and Habiba buvi. He describes these images with positive words: modest, kind, generous, helpful.
After reading these words, the reader becomes sure that this person is a good character. In addition, in the story, the author compares the similarities between the characteristics of Ermon buva and his cow. For example, Ermon buva is safe, and so is his cow. “Agar dunyoda ikkita beozor odam boʻlsa bittasi Ermon buva. Agar dunyoda ikkita beozor odam boʻlsa yana bittasi – Ermon buvaning kampiri – Habiba buvi. Mabodo dunyoda ikkita yuvosh sigir boʻlsa bittasi Ermon buvaning ola sigiri. Agar shunaqa sigir dunyoda bitta boʻlsa shu sigirning oʻzi ”[1, p. 68].
Ermon buva is one of the people who suffered from the war. Therefore, every time he opens his hand in prayer, he repeats the following words: “Yurtimiz tinch bo’lsin. U dunyoyu bu dunyo qirg’inbarot bo’lmasin” [1, p. 69]. This praying was the main wish not only for him, but for all of the people living at that time. Through this the author illustrates the the pains of the common people.
Another aspect of Ermon buva in this story is that the children like it very much. When he tells a story, all the children listen attentively. Ermon buva tries to convey the bitter truths of life to children through these stories. In his story, Ermon buva tells about the bitter consequences of the war, what losses it brought to people. Through the heroes of the fairy tale, he releases his inner pain: “Urushni qiladigan-ku odamlar, bizda nima gunoh”, “Sen bizni odamlar uchun yaratgan eding-ku, nimaga odamzod bizga qiron keltiradi” [1, p.76] . Ermon buva chooses his son as a main character for the stories that he tells children every time. Olmishvoy goes to war and never returns. Though his commander writes about his heroic death, Ermon buva does not believe these words. During their whole life he continues waiting for him. In addition, Habiba buvi is considered one of the sincere images described in the story. She always welcomes children with open arms. We can feel it whenever she treats children kindly, sharing presents to them in spite they hold a poor life. Habiba buvi’s gentle and positive qualities are clearly depicted through the following words: “Voy uyinga bug’doy to’lgurlar, voy ko’paygurlar, kela qolinglar,” [1, p. 70]. The author of the short story describes her with these words: “Bilaman, dunyoda Habiba buvidan saxiy odam yo’q” [1, p. 72]. It means that Habiba buvi is the gentlest person in the world.
As we read the story, the war was not merciful not only to its fighters, but also to the parents who sent their children to participate in the war. When Habiba buvi died, the words of Ermon buva really made readers sorrowful: “Bittagina bolasini ko’rolmay ketdi-ya! Oltmishvoyning diydoriga to’yolmay ketdi-ya!” [1, p. 81]. At the end of the story, a scene depicting the spiritual breakdown of a person is depicted. Ermon buva has not shown that he cried at all until now. He always deceived himself by saying that his son was alive. In the end, we witness the mental breakdown of a person who lost two close people.
In conclusion, it should be noted that in this story of the writer, we can learn that the father and mother were separated from their only son and were comforting themselves in the company of other children. Most of the stories in that collection describes war and its consequences. The writer skillfully described the loss of self-spirituality of a person who has lost his loved ones through the image of Ermon buva. The story is not just called “Ermon buvaning tilagi”. In it, from the beginning to the end, he wishes to have peaceful life without war among his loved ones. Through this image, the writer described the sufferings and difficulties of the entire Uzbek people.
