Е-mail aigulechka.92@mail.ru

“My  mother  says  it  isn’t  nice  to  fib,”  said  Jane.

“Of  course  it  isn’t.  It’s  very  bad,”  agreed  Mrs.  Bentley.

“And  not  to  listen  to  fibs.”

“Who  was  fibbing  to  you,  Jane?”

Jane  looked  at  her  and  then  glanced  nervously  away.  “You  were.”

“I?”  Mrs.  Bentley  laughed  and  put  her  withered  claw  to  her  small  bosom.  “About  what?”

“About  your  age.  About  being  a  little  girl.”

<…>

“You’re  joking  with  us,”  giggled  Jane.  “You  weren’t  really  ten  ever,  were  you,  Mrs.  Bentley?”

“You  run  on  home!”  the  woman  cried  suddenly,  for  she  could  not  stand  their  eyes.  “I  won’t  have  you  laughing.”

“And  your  name’s  not  really  Helen?”

“Of  course  it’s  Helen!”

“Good-bye,”  said  the  two  girls,  giggling  away  across  the  lawn  under  the  seas  of  shade,  Tom  followed  them  slowly.

“Thanks  for  the  ice  cream!”

“Once  I  played  hopscotch!”  Mrs.  Bentley  cried  after  them,  but  they  were  gone.”  [1,  c.  78—81].

№  1  Read  the  last  sentence  once  again.  What  does  the  word  “hopscotch”  mean?  Find  the  Russian  equivalent  of  the  word.

№  2  Consult  the  “Dictionary  of  Great  Britain”  by  Adrian  Room  or  the  dictionary  “Великобритания.  Лингвострановедческий  словарь”  by  G.D.  Tomakhin  to  get  more  information  on  the  word.

№  3  Do  you  have  the  same  game  in  your  country?  Is  it  popular  with  children?  Do  you  like  this  game?  Have  you  ever  played  it?

№  4  Compare  the  different  schemes  of  playing  hopscotch.  Do  they  coincide  with  the  Russian  way  of  playing  this  game?

№  5  Have  you  ever  tried  one  of  the  above  mentioned  ways  of  playing  hopscotch?  Let’s  go  and  try!

№  6  Read  the  letter  of  your  English-speaking  pen-friend  about  hopscotch:

…Hi!  I’m  so  tired.  I  have  been  playing  hopscotch  all  the  day  with  my  neighbors.  The  last  time  you  asked  me  to  write  about  the  rules  of  playing  this  game  in  England.  Finally,  I  decided  to  write  you  about  this  amazing  game.  Players  toss  the  marker  (typically  a  stone,  a  coin  or  a  bean  bag)  into  the  first  square  one  by  one.  The  marker  must  land  completely  within  the  definite  square.  If  it  doesn’t  touch  the  line,  the  first  player  hops  then  through  all  the  squares,  skipping  the  square  with  the  marker  in  it.  Single  squares  must  be  hopped  on  one  foot.  There  are  also  additional  squares  marked  "Safe",  "Home",  or  "Rest".  They  are  neutral,  and  thus  the  player  may  hop  through  them  in  any  desirable  manner.  After  hopping  into  the  "Safe",  "Home",  or  "Rest"  the  player  must  then  turn  around  and  return  through  the  course  (square  9,  then  squares  8  and  7,  next  square  6  and  so  forth)  on  one  or  two  legs  depending  on  the  square  until  he  or  she  reaches  the  square  with  their  marker.  Any  foul  (the  player  steps  on  a  line,  misses  a  square,  or  loses  balance)  leads  to  the  transfer  of  the  course  to  the  next  player  [2].

Now  you  know  the  way  we  play  hopscotch.  Tell  me  please  how  Russian  children  play  this  game.

I  have  to  go  now.

Hope  to  hear  from  your  soon.

All  the  best,

Kerstin”

Write  back  to  Kerstin.

In  your  letter:

·     answer  her  questions

·     ask  her  3  questions  about  her  neighbors

Write  100—140  words.

№  9  Now  you  know  about  English  and  American  hopscotch.  Write  down  the  definition  of  the  word  “hopscotch”  in  your  dictionary  both  in  English  and  Russian.

Далее  мы  предлагаем  вашему  вниманию  следующий  отрывок.

Отрывок   №  2

“This  noon.  The  smell  of  the  leather  cushions  under  their  bodies,  the  gray  perfume  smell  of  their  own  sachets  trailing  back  as  they  moved  in  their  silent  Green  Machine  through  the  small,  languorous  town.

It  happened  quickly.  Rolling  soft  onto  the  sidewalk  at  noon,  because  the  streets  were  blistering  and  fiery,  and  the  only  shade  was  under  the  lawn  trees,  they  had  glided  to  a  blind  comer,  bulbing  their  throaty  horn.  Suddenly,  like  a  jack-in-the-box,  Mister  Quartermain  had  tottered  from  nowhere!

“Look  out!”  screamed  Miss  Fern.

“Look  out!”  screamed  Miss  Roberta.

“Look  out!”  cried  Mister  Quartermain.

The  two  women  grabbed  each  other  instead  of  the  steering  stick.”  [1,  c.  107—108].

№  1Translate  the  underlined  word  into  Russian.  Is  it  familiar  to  you?

№  2  Consult  the  “Dictionary  of  Great  Britain”  by  Adrian  Room  or  the  dictionary  “Великобритания.  Лингвострановедческий  словарь”  by  G.D.  Tomakhin  to  get  more  information  on  the  word.

№  3  Memorize

A  jack-in-the-box  is  a  children 's  toy   which  is  on  the  surface  resembles  a  box  with  a  crank.  After  turning  the  crank,  the  box  produces  a  melody ,  often  "Pop  Goes  the  Weasel ".  At  the  end  of  the  tune  there  is  a  "surprise":  the  lid  pops  open  and  a  figure,  usually  a  clown   or  jester ,  pops  out  of  the  box.  Some  jack-in-the-boxes  open  at  random  times  when  cranked,  making  the  startle  even  more  effective  [3].

№  4  Do  you  have  such  a  toy  in  your  country?  If  not,  are  there  any  toys  alike?

№  5  There  are  different  versions  concerning  the  origin  of  this  toy.  Read  and  memorize  one  of  the  versions.

“A  theory  as  to  the  origin  of  the  jack-in-the-box  is  that  it  comes  from  the  14th  century  English   prelate   Sir  John  Schorne .  According  to  folklore ,  he  once  cast  the  devil  into  a  boot  to  protect  the  village  of  North  Marston   in  Buckinghamshire ”  [3].

№  6  Find  the  other  stories  about  the  origin  of  this  toy.

№  7  Make  a  picture  of  jack-in-the-box  and  tell  your  partner  about  this  lovely  toy.

In  your  story:

·     describe  the  toy;

·     tell  the  way  it  works;

·     tell  one  of  the  stories  of  its  origin.

Write  100—120  words.
