RENDERING SPANISH SPEECH IN THE TV SERIES “MODERN FAMILY”

ABSTRACT
With the growing popularity of American comedy films in Russia and the CIS, it is getting more and more essential to provide high-quality movie translations. This article aims at analysing how Spanish speech is rendered in the tv series “Modern Family”.
АННОТАЦИЯ
Западные комедийные фильмы набирают огромную популярность в России и странах СНГ, в связи с чем возрастает и потребность в высококачественных переводах этих фильмов. В этой стайте мы проанализируем, каким образом передается испанская речь в сериале «Американская семья».

We approve of the LostFilm translation, which retains both the Spanish-language embedding and the comic effect. Retaining Spanish-language lines is essential since they are an important element of Gloria's speech portrait. In Channel One's official dubbing, the translators preserved the Spanish-language phrase "mi papi", but the rest of the Spanish-language sentence is not translated at all (¡La abuela va a estar dichosa! - Grandma will be thrilled!). It is not advisable to omit this phrase because in the next scene, in a conversation with her grandmother, Gloria will start to praise her son.

We approve of both translations, which retain the Spanish-language sentences and the comic effect. The importance of retaining the Spanish sentences is justified by the fact that they are an indispensable element of Gloria's speech portrait, as well as a major component of the comic effect in this scene.
In conclusion, the Spanish speech is translated when the meaning of the phrase is important for understanding the cinematic scene. Otherwise, when the sudden foreign speech is the result of excitement, anger or a burst of emotion, the translator should preserve it as it is in the original.
