TRANSLATION OF GRAMMAR MISTAKES IN THE TV SERIES “MODERN FAMILY”

ABSTRACT

With the growing popularity of American comedy films in Russia and the CIS, it is getting more and more essential to provide high-quality movie translations. This article aims at analysing the translation of grammar mistakes in the tv series “Modern Family”.

АННОТАЦИЯ

Западные комедийные фильмы набирают огромную популярность в России и странах СНГ, в связи с чем возрастает и потребность в высококачественных переводах этих фильмов. В этой стайте мы проанализируем перевод грамматических ошибок в английской речи в сериале «Американская семья».

Example 1

In both cases the translators decided to level out the excessive use of the article "the" before the abstract noun “confidence”. We have suggested a variant of translation that compensates for this grammatical error.

Suggested translation variant:

Я всегда одеваюсь вызывающе. Люди мной восхищаются, потому что я уверенная в себе.

This translation does not distort the main idea of the scene, with a minor grammatical error compensated by an equally minor error in the use of the full form of the adjective. Taking into account that in Spanish adjectives are not divided into full and short forms, Gloria may well have made such a mistake in Russian.

Example 2

In this scene, Gloria wants to say that she does not take criticism, but the phrase turns out somewhat confusing in terms of syntax. In the official Channel One dubbing, the translators preserved the main idea of the scene and compensated for the mistake. This translation can be considered quite adequate and equivalent. The LostFilm translation can cause some misunderstandings because the adjective "скрытый" and the verb "скрывать" do not make you think that Gloria means that she does not take criticism.

In conclusion, when translating grammar errors, the translator should analyze how serious the error is and identify the reasons for it, and then compensate for it or use grammatical substitution.
