TRANSLATION OF LEXICAL MISTAKES IN THE TV SERIES “MODERN FAMILY”

ABSTRACT
With the growing popularity of American comedy films in Russia and the CIS, it is getting more and more essential to provide high-quality movie translations. This article aims at analysing the translation of lexical mistakes in the tv series “Modern Family”.
АННОТАЦИЯ
Западные комедийные фильмы набирают огромную популярность в России и странах СНГ, в связи с чем возрастает и потребность в высококачественных переводах этих фильмов. В этой стайте мы проанализируем перевод лексических ошибок в английской речи в сериале «Американская семья».

In the Channel One official dubbing, the translators preserved the comic effect, the main idea of the scene, and compensated for the lexical error. This translation can be considered quite adequate and equivalent. On the contrary, the LostFilm translation can cause some misunderstandings since the Jay's and Gloria's lines lack logic. Besides, the comic effect and speech contamination have been levelled.

Claire: Do you see that? It's all his fault. Just like I said. I was right! Suck it! […] What? None of you believe me, so I got proof. You should all be sucking it right now. Gloria: Ay, please, stop with the "sucking it", Claire. They're children. |
Russia Channel One: -Вот, видели! Это он виноват! Вот так! Я была права! Выкуси! […] Что?! Вы мне не верили! Вот доказательство. Так что выкусите все! -Попридержи язык, Клэр. Тут же дети! |
LostFilm: - Все видели? Это он виноват, как я и говорила. Я была права. Съели? […] Что?! Вы мне не верили, и я нашла доказательство, чтобы вы все умылись! - Перестань шуметь, Клэр! Тут же дети! |
It seems that Gloria thinks that the phrase "suck it" is only relevant in the context of sexual relations and blames Claire for using such words in front of her children. After comparing these translations, we gave preference to the official Channel One dubbing. Although it is not clear from the translation whether Gloria understood what the phrase "suck it!" means, the translation is quite adequate. Unlike the LostFilm version, it accurately conveys the meaning without distortion.

Gloria: Hello, Houston's? We have a situation. |
Russia Channel One: Алло, Хьюстон? У нас проблемы. |
LostFilm: Алло, Хьюстонс? У нас чрезвычайная ситуация! |
In this case, the translation by LostFilm was more successful, since the distortion of the set phrase "Houston, we have problems" is preserved both in terms of vocabulary and phonetics.
In conclusion, when translating lexical errors, the most effective technique is to preserve the error with further compensation.
