RENDERING COLOMBIAN ACCENT IN THE TV SERIES “MODERN FAMILY”

ABSTRACT
With the growing popularity of American comedy films in Russia and the CIS, it is getting more and more essential to provide high-quality movie translations. This article aims at analysing how Colombian accent in English is rendered in the tv series “Modern Family”.

Западные комедийные фильмы набирают огромную популярность в России и странах СНГ, в связи с чем возрастает и потребность в высококачественных переводах этих фильмов. В этой стайте мы проанализируем передачу колумбийского акцента в английской речи в сериале «Американская семья».

In the Channel One official dubbing, the name of the dish was replaced with a more familiar one in Russia with no distortion in the main idea of the secene. In general, both translations are adequate.

In the first translation Gloria’s artificially exaggerated accent is preserved. The translation is quite adequate.
In the second version, Gloria's accent is levelled, the comic effect is lost. The translation definitely needs improvement.

One feature of the Colombian accent in English depicted in this scene is the pronunciation of [dʒ] instead of [y]. In this particular case, Claire mimics Gloria's accent and pronounces "Yes" as [dʒes]. Unfortunately, neither translations transmitted the pronunciation peculiarity. One possible solution is to replace "Да" with "Конечно," which has a reduced vowel "o" and a "ch" sound. These sounds are pronounced with more intensity in Spanish, so mimicking the accent would be much easier.
In conclusion, when rendering the Colombian accent, it is necessary to preserve it, since it forms the basis of the speech portrait of the main character in these scenes. One of the most effective techniques is to identify the features of the Colombian accent in Russian on the basis of a comparative analysis of the phonetic system of the Spanish and Russian languages.
