ABSTRACT

With the growing popularity of American comedy films in Russia and the CIS, it is getting more and more essential to provide high-quality film translations. This article aims at analysing the linguacultural aspect of the translation of humour in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

АННОТАЦИЯ

Западные комедийные фильмы набирают огромную популярность в России и странах СНГ, в связи с чем возрастает и потребность в высококачественных переводах этих фильмов. В этой стайте мы проанализируем лингвокультурологический аспект перевода юмора в фильме «Моя большая греческая свадьба».

Keywords: audiovisual translation, comedy, linguacultural aspect, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Ключевые слова: АВД, комедия, лингвокультурологический аспект, Моя большая греческая свадьба.

The idea of national superiority, being rather common among Greeks, is one of the main sources of humorous scenes in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding. In this article, we will have a look at the humorous scenes that reflect this idea. Our main aim is to discern whether the translators took into account the linguacultural aspect of translation.

Таблица 1

Example 1

The original version

- Now, give me a word... any word, and l’ll show you how the root of that word is Greek. Okay?

How about arachnophobia?

“Arachna”, that comes from the Greek word for “spider”... and “phobia” means “fear”, so fear of spider. There you go.

- Okay, Mr. Portokalos. How about the word “kimono”?

- Kimono? Kimono, kimono... Of course! “Kimono” comes from the Greek word “cheimonas”... that means “winter”. So, what do you wear in the winter time to stay warm? A robe. You see? Robe, kimono. There you go.

The official translation (dubbing)

е. кимоно. Вот и связь!

According to some specialists in cultural studies, Russian humour tends to be less direct and full of various subtexts [1, p. 34], whereas American humour is concrete and full of comments that are meant to explain some minor details [2, p.12-13]. The official translation is as exhaustive as the original version and in both cases, the ideas are expressed explicitly, with no subtexts; thus, the linguacultural aspect of translation was not considered. However, there could not be any doubts that the official translation is adequate and correct from the point of view of pragmatics. Such absurd judgements are typical of Mr Portokalous, and making his speech less explicit and less concrete would falsify his personality to a certain extent.

Example 2

The original version

Wrinkles, no!

Greeks don’t creak.

The official translation (dubbing)

Морщины? Нет!

У греков их не бывает!

In my view, this is another example that shows that the linguacultural aspect of translating humour was not taken into consideration. Moreover, the translators did not conserve the rhyme of the original phrase, which led to the loss of the comical effect.

All things considered, although the studied humorous scenes in My Big Fat Greek Wedding do not reflect any linguacultural particularity of Russian humour, in some cases, such translation decisions could be justified.
