All children grow up very quickly. It seems that only yesterday your child was a toddler, carelessly running and playing in the yard with other guys. And now, the moment has come when it is time for him to go to school. For every parent, this is a very significant moment in life, because your child is on the verge of a new adult world. Now, it is not the games in the yard that come to the fore, but school and study. But how do you know that your child is really ready for school and how successfully he will learn the school curriculum? You will learn about this in this article.
Teachers and psychologists identify several criteria for school readiness: intellectual, psychological, social and communicative, motivational, speech and physical readiness to learn.
Let's analyze each criterion in more detail.
Intellectual readiness is associated with memory, attention, and thinking. A child should know his last name, first name, patronymic, address, birthday, correctly determine geometric shapes, know colors, navigate in terms of big-small, right-left, know prepositions. A future first grader should be able to generalize, find similarities and differences. One of the most important criteria for intellectual readiness is the ability to hold attention. It is also important that the child is able to speak in detailed phrases. For this, in preparation for school, it is important to talk to him more often, to encourage the expression of his thoughts and feelings. It is good if a child can read and count before school.
Psychological readiness is determined by the fact that play gradually ceases to be the main form of a child's activity. Its cognitive activity increases. He can already control his behavior, becomes more independent and interacts with other adults besides his parents.
The psychological characteristics of readiness for school also include an examination by a psychiatrist and a medical report upon examination. It is believed that a child is mentally ready to enter school if he does not have any mental and functional abnormalities, or they are insignificant that do not require correction (treatment).
Social and communicative readiness for school consists of the child's ability to build relationships in a team of peers and the ability to communicate with an adult interlocutor. It is also important that the child has all the skills of self-care and etiquette.
Motivational readiness is associated with a child's motivation to learn when a child wants to go to school, because it is interesting there, and he wants to know a lot.
Physical fitness is determined by the fact that the child does not have health problems that can interfere with learning in general school. He must have normal hearing, vision and motor skills.
In order to understand how the child has formed each criterion, there are various tests. All tests must be age appropriate for the child.
Based on the above, I want to summarize. A child entering school must be mature physically and socially. The success of his schooling depends on his psychological maturity and motivation to learn. Therefore, the parents of the future student need to start preparing the child for school in advance.
