ABSTRACT
This paper examines video game localization as a complex form of translation that combines linguistic, cultural, and technical adaptation. Unlike ordinary translation, localization adjusts game content, interface elements, humor, and cultural references for a target audience while preserving the original atmosphere of the game. The article discusses the stages of localization, its linguistic and technical challenges, and the importance of cultural adaptation in the global game industry.
АННОТАЦИЯ
В данной статье рассматривается локализация видеоигр как сложная форма перевода, объединяющая лингвистическую, культурную и техническую адаптацию. В отличие от обычного перевода, локализация адаптирует игровой контент, элементы интерфейса, юмор и культурные отсылки для целевой аудитории, сохраняя при этом оригинальную атмосферу игры. В статье обсуждаются этапы локализации, её лингвистические и технические трудности, а также значение культурной адаптации в мировой игровой индустрии.

Introduction
Game localization is more than the direct translation of texts from one language to another. It is a process of adapting a video game to the linguistic and cultural expectations of a new audience. Localization includes the translation of dialogues, menus, subtitles, and interface elements, as well as the adaptation of humor, symbols, images, and even gameplay elements. The main purpose of localization is to create a comfortable and immersive experience for players in a different cultural environment.
Localization Process
The localization process usually consists of several stages. First, developers prepare text, audio, and graphic materials for translation. Then translators adapt dialogues and interface elements while maintaining the style and atmosphere of the game. After translation, the localized content is integrated into the game and tested for technical and linguistic accuracy. In large projects, localization may also include dubbing and subtitles. Modern game companies often use simultaneous release strategies, where all language versions are released at the same time.
Linguistic and Cultural Challenges
Video games often contain slang, jokes, idioms, and culture-specific references that cannot be translated literally. Translators must preserve the emotional tone and personality of characters while making dialogues understandable for local players. For example, unfamiliar cultural references may be replaced with equivalents that are better known in the target culture. Another challenge is the limited space in menus and buttons, which requires concise and natural wording.
Technical Aspects
Localization is closely connected with technical adaptation. Different languages require support for various alphabets, fonts, and writing systems. Some languages use longer phrases, which affects the design of menus and interface elements. Developers must also ensure that localized content works correctly with the game engine and does not create display errors or software bugs.
Conclusion
Game localization is a multidisciplinary process that combines translation, cultural adaptation, and technical work. Successful localization helps developers reach global audiences and improves player engagement. High-quality localization preserves the original atmosphere of the game while making it feel natural for players from different cultures.
