FASHION ICONS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON MASS CULTURE HOW CELEBRITIES
ABSTRACT
In modern science, more and more attention is being paid to how celebrities influence fashion and society through social media and digital platforms. This study examines how the images of famous personalities shape people's style and behavior. To do this, the author analyzed the images of style icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Joan Jett, and Princess Diana, and also conducted a survey among young people aged 13 to 25. The results showed that although most young people consider themselves independent in their clothing choices, they are actually influenced by celebrities. This influence often manifests in negative ways, contributing to problems such as the promotion of unhealthy beauty standards, excessive sexualization, and overconsumption. Based on these findings, the author proposed a concept of "responsible" style that helps celebrities promote positive values and serve as good role models for the younger generation.

This research focuses on one of the key problems of modern society — the influence of celebrities on fashion trends and mass culture. In the age of globalization and the spread of digital media, access to stars' images has become almost unlimited. This has turned celebrities into the main influencers on the lifestyle of millions of people, especially young people. The relevance of this work is explained not only by the positive aspects of this influence (promoting new ideas, making fashion more democratic) but also by several negative consequences. These include the promotion of unhealthy body standards, extreme sexualization, and the culture of overconsumption. Because of this, it became necessary not only to analyze the current situation but also to offer an ethical alternative — a concept of "responsible" style for public figures.
The goal of this work was to study how iconic figures influence fashion and society, and to develop recommendations for creating a positive image for modern celebrities.
To achieve this goal, the following tasks were completed:
- Analysis of the images of iconic personalities (Marilyn Monroe, Joan Jett, Princess Diana) who had a significant impact on fashion history.
- Study of the social functions of fashion and its role in shaping public consciousness.
- Conducting a survey among young people to find out how much stars really influence their shopping habits and style choices.
- Identifying the main negative trends promoted by modern media personalities.
- Formulating the main principles of a "responsible" style.
The research was based on several methods: theoretical analysis of scientific literature on the sociology of fashion (works by A. B. Gofman, R. Barthes, J. Baudrillard), retrospective analysis of iconic figures' images, and empirical research in the form of an anonymous survey. The survey involved respondents aged 13 to 25, which helped get opinions from the audience most exposed to external influence.
During the work, it was found that fashion is much more than just the clothing industry. Fashion is a powerful tool for social regulation, communication, and differentiation. The analysis of style icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Joan Jett, and Princess Diana showed that their influence on mass culture came not from following short-term trends, but from their unique ability to combine seemingly incompatible qualities in their style while remaining authentic. Monroe symbolized a combination of vulnerability and sensuality, Jett — femininity and brutality, and Princess Diana — elegance and accessibility to ordinary people. Their examples prove that a fashion image can be a tool for self-expression and shaping cultural standards of beauty.
The practical part of the research revealed several paradoxical but telling trends:
- Declared independence. The vast majority of respondents (95%) said that when choosing clothes, they follow only their own style and comfort, not the choices of stars. However, as the quote from the film "The Devil Wears Prada" included in the research shows, this feeling is often an illusion. Mass consumers do not always realize that their "own choice" was actually shaped earlier by the fashion industry.
- Awareness of negative influence. Despite denying that stars directly influence their purchases, 55% of respondents admitted that celebrities generally have a negative influence on society. The key problems mentioned were: promoting insecurities and eating disorders, shocking behavior that goes beyond social norms, overconsumption, and excessive sexualization.
- Responsibility. An important finding was about who should be responsible: 71% of survey participants believe that parents, not celebrities, should be mainly responsible for controlling the content consumed by children and teenagers.
The research detailed four main groups of risks connected with the influence of modern fashion trends set by stars:
- Overconsumption: Constantly changing trends provoke "mindless buying" — people buy huge amounts of clothes that quickly go out of fashion and are thrown away, even if they are in perfect condition.
- Promotion of unhealthy body standards: Using the examples of Kate Moss and the "heroin chic" phenomenon, as well as the K-pop industry, the research shows how fashion can popularize extreme thinness that borders on dystrophy.
- Excessive sexualization: Analysis of images of Sabrina Carpenter, Sydney Sweeney, and Bianca Censori shows how revealing outfits become the main tool for attracting attention. This blurs the line between self-expression and shock value for the sake of publicity, creating the impression that baring your body to attract attention and fame is completely normal.
- Blurring social boundaries: Scandalous behavior and outfits slowly change what society considers acceptable, especially for young people. This can make them think that any way of attracting attention is justified.
The main result of the research was the development of a concept of a "responsible" style for modern stars. This concept is based on three main components, identified through analyzing both negative and positive examples:
- Uniqueness: Encouraging sincere experiments and self-expression, refusing to mindlessly copy others. Examples include Zendaya's creative search and, historically, Joan Jett.
- Morality: Understanding the boundaries of what is acceptable, respecting the audience (especially young people), and thinking about the consequences of one's actions and public images. A positive example mentioned is plus-size model Hayley Hasselhoff, who works to promote body acceptance.
- Values: Using one's platform to promote socially important ideas. Angelina Jolie is given as an example: by wearing clothes repeatedly and through her ecological project Atelier Jolie, she fights against the culture of disposable consumption.
The research confirmed that the influence of celebrities on mass culture and young people is complex and multi-layered. Even though young people say they are independent, this influence remains significant, often unconscious, and can lead to serious social and psychological problems.
The practical significance of the work is as follows:
- Theoretical approaches to studying fashion and its social functions were organized and summarized.
- Key negative trends promoted by modern media personalities were identified and described in detail.
- A concept of "responsible" style was proposed and explained. This can serve as an ethical guide for both celebrities and professionals in PR and image-making.
- The research materials can be used in educational courses on sociology, cultural studies, and fashion history, as well as in educational work with teenagers and young people.
Thus, the project helps us better understand the complex relationships between the fashion industry, media personalities, and society. It shows the need for a more conscious and ethical approach to creating and sharing public images.
Ultimately, fashion is not just about clothes — it is a powerful tool that shapes how people see themselves and others. Celebrities have a choice: they can use their influence to promote empty trends and shock value, or they can set a positive example and help create a healthier, more thoughtful fashion culture for future generations. Being a good role model is perhaps the most valuable thing a modern star can offer.
