Cambodia is a land of profound contrasts, where the ancient silence of jungle-cloaked temples meets the vibrant energy of its modern cities. Before you set off to explore the magnificent Angkor Wat, the tropical shores of Koh Rong, or the poignant streets of Phnom Penh, a little practical preparation can make all the difference. This article covers the essentials of budget, transport, accommodation, and local flavours to help you plan a smooth and memorable trip.
Before traveling to this amazing country, it's helpful to know some basic facts about it. The official name is the Kingdom of Cambodia, and the form of government is a constitutional monarchy. The population is approximately 17 million. The official language is Khmer, the capital is Phnom Penh, and the time zone is UTC+7. Cambodia has a tropical climate, with a hot and humid season (May–October) and a dry season (November–April), which is considered the best time to visit [4]. The country is known for its Angkor temples, the pristine beaches of Sihanoukville, and the rich yet tragic history of the 20th century. To ensure a successful trip, tourists should understand the financial system, transportation, accommodation options, top attractions, and local cuisine.
Financial Profile and Budget
The official currency of Cambodia is the Cambodian riel (KHR, symbol ៛). However, in practice, the US dollar (USD) is widely used, especially in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, and for taxis. Riels are usually received as change for amounts less than $1. It's best to exchange money at specialized exchange offices or banks (e.g., ACLEDA, ABA). ATMs dispense both dollars and riels, but often charge a commission (around $4-6 per transaction). Russian cards may not work, so it's recommended to carry cash in dollars and international cards (Visa/Mastercard) issued in friendly countries [6].
Average daily expenses for a tourist include a plate of local "fried rice" with meat (2-4 USD), a 1.5-litre bottle of water (1 USD), and a tuk-tuk ride around the city (2-5 USD). Thus, a budget traveler (hostels, street food, tuk-tuks) spends 25-40 USD per day. A comfortable stay (3-star hotel, restaurants, air conditioning) costs 50-90 USD per day. Tipping is not required, but appreciated: 5-10% in a good restaurant or 1-2 USD for a guide or a driver [2].
Transportation
The main air hubs are Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) and Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI, new, opened in 2023). Low-cost airlines (AirAsia, VietJet, Bangkok Airways) connect Cambodia with the entire region. Domestic flights between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap take about 45 minutes (tickets from 50 USD).
The main ground transportation between the cities is the bus. Large companies (Giant Ibis, Mekong Express) offer comfortable rides with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and lunch stops. The Phnom Penh-Siem Reap route takes 5-6 hours (12-18 USD). Within the cities, the main means of transportation is the tuk-tuk (a scooter with a sidecar). Always agree on a price in advance: a trip within the city center costs 1-2 USD, while a long-distance trip costs 4-7 USD. Phnom Penh also has aggregator apps (Grab, PassApp) that protect against price gouging.
For water travel, high-speed catamarans are used on Tonle Sap Lake (for example, from Siem Reap to Battambang) in the rain season. Motorbike rentals are also popular (from 6-10 USD per day), but an international driving permit is required [5].
Accommodation: from guesthouses to luxury resorts
Cambodia offers a wide range of accommodation to suit any budget [1]. Hostels and guesthouses charge from 5 to 15 US dollars per night and typically include a fan, shared common areas, and often breakfast. Travelers looking for more comfort can choose two- or three-star hotels, which cost between 20 and 45 US dollars per night and provide clean rooms, air conditioning, and a hot shower. For those seeking luxury, four- and five-star hotels range from 80 to 300 US dollars and feature swimming pools, spas, and excellent service. Along the coast in Sihanoukville and the Koh Rong Islands, beachfront bungalows are particularly popular, with prices ranging from 30 to 150 US dollars.
The boutique hotels in Siem Reap deserve special mention. They are often decorated in a colonial style with Khmer motifs. Many are located near the Angkor temple complex and offer a free shuttle service. Registration is required upon check-in: a photocopy of your passport is required. For longer stays (more than 30 days), a tourist visa extension is required (online or through travel agencies).
Best areas to stay
In Siem Reap, the Old Market area, known as Pub Street, is the perfect choice for those seeking nightlife and lively atmosphere. For a quieter experience, the East River area offers a more peaceful environment.
In Phnom Penh, Sihanouk Quay serves as the main tourist center with plenty of dining and entertainment options. Alternatively, the Boeng Keng Kang (BKK) area is a quiet residential neighborhood with cozy cafes.
Along the coast in Sihanoukville, Serendipity Beach is ideal for budget travelers, while Otres Beach provides a calm and relaxing retreat.
It's best to book accommodation on Booking.com, Agoda, or through local travel agencies. During the low season (May–September), prices are reduced by 30–50% [1].
Top Attractions: 7 Places for a First Visit
Cambodia is incredibly rich in history and nature. Here are seven must-sees [3]:
Angkor Wat in Siem Reap is the largest religious complex in the world. Dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and built in the twelfth century, this majestic temple has become the symbol of Cambodia. The entrance fee for 2026 is 37 USD for one day or 62 dollars for three days. Be sure to wake up early to watch the sunrise over the main temple. Bayon Temple, located within the ancient city of Angkor Thom, is famous for its 216 stone faces of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, which gaze in different directions. Admission is included in the general Angkor ticket. Ta Prohm, also known as the Tomb Raider Temple, offers mesmerizing ruins where stone structures are intertwined with the enormous roots of fig trees. The site is deliberately not reconstructed to retain its original appearance.
The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda in Phnom Penh serve as the current residence of the king. The Silver Pagoda is particularly notable for its floor paved with five thousand silver tiles. A ticket costs approximately 10 USD. Tuol Sleng, the Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh, is a former school that was converted into the S-21 prison by the Khmer Rouge. It is a tragic but important place for understanding Cambodia's twentieth-century history. Entry costs 5 USD [6].
The beaches near Sihanoukville and Koh Rong Island offer white sand, turquoise water, excellent diving, and total relaxation. The boat ride from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong takes forty-five minutes, with tickets ranging from 15 to 25 USDs.
The floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake, such as Chong Kneas Village, are unique communities where houses, schools, and even churches float on the water. A boat tour costs about 15 USD [6].
Other worthwhile destinations include the ruins of the ancient capital of Koh Ker, the Preah Vihear temple complex on the border with Thailand, and Kirirom National Park with its beautiful waterfalls.
Cambodian Cuisine: A Journey Through Time and Culture
Cambodian cuisine, known as Khmer cuisine, is less spicy than Thai food but incredibly flavorful thanks to the generous use of fish sauce, lemongrass, galangal, and fresh basil. Each dish tells a story of the land and the river, offering a true journey through the country's rich culture [2].
Must-try dishes and drinks
Fish Amok is the national dish of Cambodia. It consists of fish cooked gently in coconut milk with eggs and aromatic spices, then steamed inside a banana leaf.
Lok Lak features marinated beef stir-fried with vegetables and served with a poached egg alongside a tangy lime and pepper sauce.
Nom Ban Chok is a traditional breakfast of rice noodles topped with a mild fish-based curry and an abundance of fresh vegetables.
Bai Sach Chrouk, grilled pork with rice, is a classic Khmer breakfast. For the more adventurous eater, fried insects such as crickets, spiders, and larvae are considered an exotic treat. In the markets of Siem Reap, these crunchy snacks are popular with a cold beer.
Sweets and fruits are not to be missed. Sample durian, mangosteen, rambutan, or fried bananas served with rich coconut milk. Refreshing drinks include fresh sugarcane juice with ice and lime, natural coconut water, local Angkor Beer, and the distinctive pepper gin from the village of Kampong Speu.
Overall, traveling through Cambodia is an immersion into a world where the grandiose past of the ancient Khmer Empire meets the vulnerability and strength of modern history, and hot tropical beaches coexist with jungles cloaked in temples. Cambodia is a land of contrasts: the bustling markets of Phnom Penh and the dawn silence over the spires of Angkor, the bitterness of genocide and the dazzling smiles of the locals. Once you visit Cambodia, you will remember the taste of amok, the hum of a tuk-tuk, and the feeling of touching eternity among stones entwined with the roots of centuries-old trees.
