Before traveling to Nepal, it is important to understand the key characteristics of this diverse and geographically unique country. Officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, it is located in South Asia between India and China. The population is approximately 30 million people, and the capital city is Kathmandu. The official language is Nepali, although English is widely used in tourism [6].

Nepal is known worldwide for its dramatic landscapes, ranging from lowland plains (Terai) to the Himalayan mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest peak on Earth. The climate varies significantly depending on altitude: subtropical conditions in the south, temperate in the hills, and alpine in the mountains. The country has a rich cultural and religious heritage influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism, reflected in temples, festivals, and daily life [1].

Understanding these general features is essential for planning a successful trip, as geography and infrastructure strongly influence travel conditions, costs, and logistics.

Financial Aspects

Nepal is considered an affordable destination compared to many European countries, but travelers should still understand its financial system to avoid difficulties. The official currency is the Nepalese rupee (NPR). Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, licensed exchange offices, and hotels in major cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara. Exchange services are widely available in tourist areas. ATMs are accessible in cities, but may be limited or unavailable in rural and mountainous regions [8].

Cash is the primary method of payment throughout the country. Credit and debit cards are accepted mainly in larger hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies, but small businesses and rural accommodations typically operate only with cash. Therefore, it is recommended to carry sufficient local currency, especially when traveling outside urban centers or going on trekking routes [5].

Typical daily expenses in Nepal remain quite affordable for most travelers. A cup of tea or coffee usually costs between NPR 100–300 (46–138 RUB), while bottled water ranges from NPR 50–100 (23–46 RUB). A meal at a local restaurant can be enjoyed for NPR 300–700 (138–322 RUB), and local transport typically runs from NPR 50–200 (23–92 RUB) per ride [3].

Based on these prices, a budget traveler spending on basic accommodation, simple meals, and local transport may expect daily expenses of approximately USD 20–40. A more comfortable traveler choosing better hotels and restaurants may spend USD 50–100 or more per day.

Tipping is not mandatory in Nepal but is common in tourism-related services such as guides, porters, and restaurants. Small tips are generally appreciated.

Transportation System

Transportation in Nepal is influenced by its mountainous terrain and developing infrastructure. While travel is possible throughout the country, it often requires careful planning and additional time, especially when connecting flights or planning trekking schedules.

Nepal has one main international airport — Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu — which serves as the primary entry point for international travelers. Domestic flights play an important role, especially for accessing remote mountain regions such as Lukla (gateway to Everest) and Jomsom (Annapurna region) [4]. However, domestic flights are sometimes affected by weather conditions, particularly in mountainous areas, which may lead to delays or cancellations. In contrast, railways play a minimal role in Nepal’s transportation system, with only a few short routes operating near the southern border [9].

Road transport is the most common way to travel within Nepal. The country has an extensive bus network connecting major cities and towns. There are two main types of buses: local buses (low cost, crowded) and tourist buses (more comfortable, used by visitors). Travel times can be long due to road conditions, terrain, and traffic. For example, a journey that would take a few hours in a flat country may take significantly longer in Nepal. Taxis are available in cities, especially in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Ride-sharing services are limited but present in some urban areas.

Accommodation

Nepal offers a wide range of accommodation options suitable for different budgets and travel styles. They vary from luxury hotels and resorts to tea houses.  High-end hotels are available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and popular tourist destinations such as Chitwan. Prices start from around USD 100 per night and can increase significantly depending on services offered [2].

Mid-range hotels provide more comfort, including private bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and sometimes breakfast. Prices range from USD 20 to 80 per night.

Guesthouses and budget hotels are the most common and affordable options, especially in cities and trekking areas. Prices typically range from USD 5 to 20 per night. Facilities are basic but sufficient for most travelers.

In mountainous regions, accommodation is mainly provided by tea houses. These are simple trekking lodges offering basic rooms and meals. Prices are relatively low, but facilities are limited, especially at higher altitudes [8].

Accommodation can be booked online through international platforms [2] or arranged locally upon arrival. In trekking areas, advance booking is not always necessary, but it may be useful during peak seasons. Most accommodations accept cash payments, while card payments are typically available only in larger establishments.

Tourist Attractions

Nepal is rich in natural and cultural attractions. Due to the country’s diversity, it is impossible to cover all sites in one visit, but several destinations are considered essential. They are Kathmandu Valley, Mount Everest Region, Annapurna Region, Pokhara, Chitwan National Park and Lumbini.

Kathmandu Valley includes historical cities such as Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan, known for their temples, palaces, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the iconic Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple.

Mount Everest Region is one of the most famous trekking destinations in the world, attracting adventurers and mountaineers. It is home to Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects rare species such as the snow leopard and red panda.

Annapurna Region offers diverse trekking routes with mountain views, forests, and traditional villages. It includes the world’s deepest river gorge, the Kali Gandaki Gorge, which lies between the peaks of Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri.

Pokhara is a popular tourist city known for its lakes, mountain scenery, and relaxed atmosphere. It is the starting point for the Annapurna region treks and is considered the adventure capital of Nepal, offering paragliding, zip‑lining, and white‑water rafting.

Chitwan National Park is a UNESCO-listed park famous for wildlife, including rhinoceroses, elephants, and Bengal tigers. is home to more than 680 species of birds, making it one of the best birdwatching destinations in Asia.

Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha and an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. It features monasteries and meditation centres built by Buddhist communities from countries such as Japan, China, Thailand, and Vietnam, reflecting diverse architectural styles.

Cultural Traditions and Festivals

Nepal has a rich cultural life with numerous festivals throughout the year. Most are connected to Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Important festivals in Nepal include Dashain (the biggest national festival), Tihar (festival of lights), and Holi (festival of colors). Dashain is celebrated nationwide across Nepal during September or October, marking the victory of good over evil and honoring the goddess Durga. Tihar, which takes place in October or November, is observed throughout the country with special devotion in the Kathmandu Valley, where people worship crows, dogs, cows, and the goddess of wealth Laxmi. Holi falls in late February or March and is celebrated with particular fervor in the Terai region and the hill towns of Pokhara and Kathmandu, where participants throw colored powders and water to welcome spring and the triumph of good over evil. These events provide insight into local traditions and social life, making them an important part of the travel experience.

Nepalese Cuisine

Nepalese cuisine is a direct reflection of the country’s dramatic geography and rich cultural diversity, offering travelers an authentic taste of local life. The backbone of nearly every meal is Dal Bhat, a hearty combination of rice served with lentil soup and spiced vegetables – this is the staple food that fuels locals and trekkers alike, and it is often refillable, making it an excellent value. Another must-try is Momo, steamed dumplings filled with meat or vegetables, widely available as a satisfying snack or meal. In the cooler mountain regions, Thukpa, a warming noodle soup, provides essential comfort and energy. For those with a sweet tooth, traditional snacks like Sel roti, a crispy, ring-shaped rice bread, are a treat, while yogurt and local sweets are common in urban markets. Tea is ubiquitous throughout the country, but in the Himalayan areas, travelers should not miss butter tea, a salty, creamy beverage made with yak butter that helps combat altitude sickness and cold [7].

Understanding this food landscape is important for tourists because meals in Nepal are generally simple yet highly nutritious – particularly in trekking zones, where dishes are intentionally designed to provide sustained energy for long days on the trail. Sampling local cuisine not only enriches the travel experience but also supports small teahouses and local communities along the way.

Overall, traveling in Nepal offers a unique experience shaped by dramatic landscapes, spiritual traditions, and cultural diversity. Unlike highly developed tourist destinations, Nepal requires flexibility and preparation, but rewards travelers with authentic and memorable experiences. The combination of mountains, historical sites, and local traditions makes Nepal a distinctive destination. For many visitors, the country is not only a place to travel, but also an opportunity to explore a different way of life and connect with nature and culture.
