ABSTRACT

The article provides an analysis of the impact of gaming technology on the formation of motivation for the implementation of social activity of youth; the results of a sociological study of the level of social activity of youth of the Belgorod region; practical recommendations on the formation of social activity of students by means of gaming activities are presented.

АННОТАЦИЯ

В статье дается анализ влияния игровых технологий на формирование мотивации к осуществлению социальной активности молодежи; приводятся результаты социологического исследования уровня социальной активности молодежи Белгородской области; представлены практические рекомендации по формированию социальной активности учащейся молодежи средствами игровой деятельности.

According to the 2019 data, provided by The Russian Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), there are 37 million young people, aged

from 15 to 34 [1, p. 1]. There are 146.780.720 people (data as for 2019) total living in Russia, young people making up to 25% of total Russian population. Based on this data we can conclude, that the younger generation is indeed numerous and significant for the modern society.

By analyzing Belgorodstat, we can say that there are currently 330.237 [2, p 3] people you can call young in Belgorod Region. Based on info from The Territorial Federal State Statistics Service we can assume that the amount of young people in the region will keep on growing.

According to Government Order from 29.11.2014 №2403-r «On the approval of the foundation of state youth policy 255 of Russian Federation till year 2025» [3, p 9] the terminology “youth” is a social-demographic group made up based on age specifics, social position and characterized by specific interests and standards. This group of people consists of those aged 14-30, sometimes including, based on rightful acts of Russian Federation and its subjects, people until age 35 who have rightful Russian Federation citizenship or living outside the country.

Regulatory framework regulating the states activity in the field of youth policy is quite large.  Main documents include Presidents Order of 6.04.2006 №325 “On measures of support for talented youth” [4, p 6], Presidents Order of 16.05.1996 №727 “On measures of state support of public associations conducting work on the military-patriotic education of youth” [5, p 8]. Stated documents are directed at comprehensive and complex development of youth, as well as at expanding its capabilities in various areas of self-realization.

In last years, there is an increase in appearing Centers for Youth Initiatives, clubs of recreational activities are being made and restored, new Centers of Patriotic Education are being created and forums are being held, as well as various levels of educational projects. Additional attention is given to volunteering, which is right now at the peak of its relevance. Nowadays, you can’t find a single socially important event, forum or celebration without volunteers, most of which are youth. Bright examples are Winter Olympics in Sochi, 2014; Annual civilian-patriotic movement, dedicated to saving personal memory of generations hurt by Great Patriotic War: “Bessmertniy Polk” (Immortal Regiment).

There are many meanings of “social activity” in scientific world. In this issue, we adhere to the definition of social activity as a characteristic of an individual or a group that determines its readiness and ability for social initiative, social creativity and responsibility for their actions in front of society. To conclude, we understand social activity as ones determination to be a part of society, to merge it in a better version of itself [6, p 20].

Analyzing the data obtained in the course of the study to determine the level of social activity of the Belgorod region youth, the following can be drawn: 70% of the respondents understand “social activity” as a self-conscious activity of a person aimed at taking part in social processes and at changing social conditions surrounding him. At the same time, the most unpopular of the 256 proposed answers was the one that defined the aforementioned concept as a special quality and the ability to act self-consciously while not only adapting to external reality, but also changing it, that is, adapting the environment to ones interests and needs. Only 10.8% of respondents agree with this definition.

Less than half (48.6%) of the respondents consider themselves socially active, whilst 64% of answers for question “Are you engaged in social activities?” were “Yes”. Paralleling with the data, obtained in the course of the expert survey, it is necessary to focus on the following points: the opinion of the expert regarding the understanding of “social activity” was one with the opinions of respondents amongst young people. When asked “Do you consider the youth of Belgorod region socially active?” about 75% of the respondents answered “Rather yes, then no”. In our opinion, this answer may be because the experts faced a situation of youth refusing to participate in socially significant events.

While answering the question “What do you think is the reason for youth’s lack of imagination?”, most experts chose the option “lack of desire”. At the same time, 80% of the interviewed experts think, that there is currently a problem of lack of initiative amongst young people.

Based on the above it can be concluded that purposeful work is needed to increase the level of social activity of the regions youth.

One of the most important forms of manifestation of social activity is patriotism. The problem of patriotic education in our country is being spoken about on state level.

In parallel with the aforementioned processes, there is a tendency towards gameification (use of game elements in a non-game context, that is, situations where game elements are used to achieve real goals in educational, adaptive and socializing activities). This phenomenon is explained by the fact that the use of game elements helps to attract ones attention and active cognitive interest, increase the efficiency of broadcasting and assimilating information. Therefore, it seems extremely relevant to use the study of the social potential gaming technologies that contribute to the formation of social activity among young people as well as their desire for learning, self-developing and self-improving.

#BELGAME is a patriotic tabletop game created with the aim of forming patriotic self-development and regional identify amongst Belgorod regions youth.

Game set consist of the game field itself, markers of four colors, game pieces, a dice, question-cards and game rules.

Let’s take a closer look at the #BELGAME contents.

Both teams and individual players can participate in the game. Optimal play-session time is one hour. On the game field in the center there is a Belgorod region map with outlined districts. Question categories are located along the perimeter. In each corner of the field there is a Coat of Arms working as players starting positions.

Game set includes 150 cads on which there are questions and answers to them, placed on different sides.

There are 6 question categories, each with its own color:

“History” – The questions are aimed at obtaining new knowledge about the historical past of the Belgorod region and fixating the knowledge of the facts already known by the youth.

“Culture” – Questions about prominent artists who were born, lived and worked in the Belgorod region.

“Geography” – Questions aimed at enriching the knowledge of young people about the peculiarities of the natural and climatic conditions of the region and the presence of minerals on its territory.

“Personalities” – Includes questions about famous people from Belgorod, thanks to whom Belgorod region is known all over the world.

“Places” – Questions are aimed at helping young people to acquire knowledge about monuments and art object located in the region.

“Miscellaneous” – Different questions from categories all above.

The experience of holding the game in various educational institutions of Belgorod and the region in 2018-2019 has demonstrated that students of different ages have significant interest in participating in this king of activity.

Thus, the project of the #BELGAME patriotic tabletop game, aimed at forming patriotic self-awareness and citizenship amongst the youth as components pf social activity, demonstrated the possibilities and prospects of using elements of gameification in the educational and leisure activities in order to form social activity of the younger generation as well as to organize a dialogue platform. With help of this dialogue platform young people will be able to easier exchange knowledge and find new teammates or friends for the implementation of socially significant projects.
